Services Performed
- Confirmed the customer's complaint and found the engine did not start intermittently. Used a multi-meter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals and found the measured voltage was below the specified range. Used a battery conductance tester to test the battery and found the battery was able to conduct the specified amount of current, which verified it operated properly. Used an alternator load tester to test the alternator by placing the battery under a load, raised the engine speed to 2,000 RPM and found the measured alternator output was below the specified minimum amperage. Off idle, used a lab scope to measure the alternating current ripple in the charging system and observed the measured alternating current ripple was above specifications. These test results verified the alternator was faulty.
- REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR AND PERFORMED A SYSTEM CHECK TO VERIFY PROPER CHARGING OUTPUT AND ELECTRICAL OPERATION. AFTER INSTALLATION, THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND TESTED TO CONFIRM NORMAL FUNCTION. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ABNORMAL CONDITIONS WERE OBSERVED, AND THE CUSTOMER’S ORIGINAL CONCERN DID NOT RETURN.
