- Confirmed the customer's complaint and found the engine was hard to start. Connected a scan tool and found codes: P0456 – Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Very Small Leak) and P1450 – Unable To Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum. Off idle, used the scan tool to monitor live data and found the fuel tank pressure sensor signal parameter was below specifications. With the key on, engine off, used the scan tool to monitor live data. Connected a smoke machine to the evaporative emission (EVAP) system, induced smoke into the system and found smoke leaked from the EVAP vent valve, indicating a clear vent valve. Used the scan tool to command the EVAP vent solenoid closed and observed the smoke stopped flowing from the EVAP vent valve, indicating a functional EVAP vent valve. Used the smoke machine to perform an EVAP system pressure check and observed the system was unable to hold pressure. Performed a visual inspection of the EVAP system but did not find signs of external leakage. Removed the purge solenoid valve hose and observed smoke leaked from the EVAP purge solenoid valve. Attached a vacuum pump to the EVAP purge solenoid valve and tested the valve by applying vacuum. The EVAP purge solenoid valve leaked and did not retain the applied vacuum, which verified the valve was defective.
- REMOVE AND REPLACE THE PURGE VALVE SOLENOID. REMOVE THE FAULTY PURGE VALVE SOLENOID FROM THE EVAP SYSTEM, INSTALL A NEW OEM-QUALITY PURGE VALVE SOLENOID, AND VERIFY PROPER OPERATION. INSPECT RELATED EVAP HOSES AND CONNECTIONS FOR ANY SIGNS OF DAMAGE OR LEAKS, CLEAR FAULT CODES, AND CONFIRM THE SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY AFTER REPAIR.
